About proposed cultural activities

Emilie offers soapstone carving workshops to create a pendant or a figurine. Unlike metals that a jeweler usually uses, this stone is easily carved with files and sandpaper. It is a perfect material for a first introduction to the small sculpture. In complete safety, young people can achieve results and complete their projects in one meeting.

At the beginning of the workshop, the artist will talk about the properties of the soapstone, compare it to other materials and explain why it will be used. She will introduce the basic techniques and will demonstrate. Then, students will use the materials at their disposal to create their works. During this stage, the artist will stay around the students to observe their progress, bring advice and answer questions. Students will be encouraged to pay attention to detail, to become aware of their work and to see evolution. As they progress, the children will unveil the different shades of colors characteristic of the stone. By coming in contact and transforming the material, young people will gain new skills and an understanding of their creative power.

During the production period, the artist will be on the lookout for the needs of each child, and each will have a detailed notebook with step by step pictures to follow.
